Box Office: “Croods” on track for $45 million, “Olympus” $25, “Spring Breakers” under $5

croods1It’s a champagne weekend over at Dreamworks, which did a healthy $12 million or so Friday heading for a $42-45 million weekend with the unproven (not a sequel) cave man comedy “The Croods.”

Saturdays are always bigger for kids’ movies, so expect this one to push into the mid-40s, maybe beyond.

Looked at from another angle, that makes this the biggest Nicolas Cage opening weekend since “Ghost Rider.”

“Olympus Has Fallen” is giving Gerard Butler a much-needed opening weekend hit. “Die Hard in the White House,” the first of two movies about terrorists attacking the place, is on track to pull in $26 million or more.

Then there’s “Admission,” not a blockbuster comedy, but not a Tina Fey hit, either. $6 million or so is below the lower end of estimates.

The people all worked up over “Spring Breakers” are apparently not that numerous. It’s in over 1000 theaters, the biggest Harmony Korine opening ever. Reviews have stirred the controversy, but it’s only on track to do about $5 million. Maybe less, depending on what those who saw it Friday tell their friends.

“Oz” continues to make big bucks for Disney, with another $20 million in store in this weekend.

“The Call” only lost about half its audience from last weekend and looks to do over $9.
