Weekend Box Office: “Planes” and “Elysium” are in a dead heat.

Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi followup to “District 9” seemed headed to an easy stroll across the box office finish line on its opening weekend. $30 million, and all alone in reaching it.

But kids are immune to reviews of the worst reviewed Disney Toon ever, and “Planes” is doing just as much business, based on Friday. With Saturday the biggest day for kids’ films, “Planes” could clear $30 and take home the bacon for this second weekend of August.

“We’re the Millers” did well Wed-Friday, and should open in the mid-$20s by Sunday night.

“Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters” is doing OK, but not exactly setting the BO on fire.
