Weekend Box Office: “Monsters U.” $82, “World War Z” 68 million

BIG openings for both films rolling out in wide release this weekend. “Man of Steel” may still have the most screens tied up, but Pixar pounced out with an $82 million blowout opening for “Monsters University” in 3D.

And “World War Z” — “troubled production” or no — did a pretty dazzling $68 million itself.  As fixes go, these paid off.

“Man of Steel” is still blowing up overseas, but cooled off a bit stateside. Will it clear $50 on its second weekend? A lot to ask.

And no, it didn’t. It barely cleared $41 million — a 64% plunge from its opening weekend. Audiences moved on from that one pretty damned quickly.

Not as quickly as “After Earth,” but quickly enough.

“The Bling Ring,” “Much Ado About Nothing” and “Before Midnight” all opened wider to decent business.  “Bling Ring” seems to be the only one with a prayer of doing “Mud” sized business (over $20 million) before the summer it done. And even that looks like a long shot.
