Weekend Box Office: “Iron Man” $75, “Gatsby” $52, “Peeples” $4.2

ironAnother big weekend for the Iron Man, with “Iron Man 3” collecting $75 million or so at the box office, winning the weekend handily thanks to a huge Saturday turnout.

But “The Great Gatsby” is a big winner, too, hauling in $52 million (a weaker Saturday than forecast after a very strong Friday). Warners would have been happy had this $120 million extravaganza done $35.

I can count on one hand the number of movies horror-and-Tyler Perry distributor Lionsgate has promoted, previewed for critics and treated like a movie as good as any other studio’s product. And “Peeples” deserved that treatment. It’s funny, well-cast, and could have been a crossover hit. As funny as “The Big Wedding,” and it earned better reviews than that one,to. “Peeples” only pulled in $4 million and change, a fraction of what “Wedding” managed (and “Wedding” was R-rated). No, Craig Robinson isn’t box office. And no, “Tyler Perry Presents” didn’t add to the box office.

Further down the top ten, “42” looks as if it will reach around $90 million — it’s under $84 as of midnight Sunday — “Mud” is over $8, “Big Wedding” has done a paltry $17.
