This long Memorial Day weekend could be close to one for the record books, should people go to see any of the many venerable franchises competing for their hard earned cash.
“Fast & Furious 6” could do better than “Fast Five,” which did north of $80 million, when, as the Box Office Guru points out, it opened with little or no competition. These movies pull a more diverse crowd than comic book or sci-fi fare (two-thirds Latino, Black and Asian) and this one has decent reviews pushing it along.
Good dumb fun? I say this will clear $100 million. Variety agrees with me. The Guru says $85, and Mr. Box Office Mojo apparently took the weekend off early.
“The Hangover Part 3” has bad reviews and a bit of franchise fatigue about it. It’ll be lucky to do $50, the Guru and I agree.Variety says that one will do $65. Maybe.
“Epic” will not open as big as “The Croods,” which had a better story, bigger laughs and much bigger names in the voice cast. $30-35, I say, $37 sayeth the Guru.
And you’ve got “Iron Man 3” hanging around, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” which should do $30-40 on its second weekend.
