Box Office: “Croods” cruises to $44 million, “Olympus” rises over $30

A Big back-on-track weekend for the movies, which had been down as much as 12% in admissions thus far this year.

“The Croods” filled in that family movie shortage by blowing up to a $44 million opening. That’s not Pixar huge or even Dreamworks huge ($50+). But it’s quite good, considering. The movie should have legs, as there’s nothing for that audience due in theaters for months.

“Olympus Has Fallen” steals a lot of the summer release “White House Down”‘s thunder by busting out for over $30 million. Gratifying, I am sure, to Gerard Butler’s female fans. “Gerry-atrics.”

“Admission” won’t do Tina Fey any favors, but since it cost so little, the $6.4 million it earned this weekend suggests it has a shot of getting into the black.

“Spring Breakers” didn’t exactly blow up. Check out that middling per-screen average. It earned about $5 million, which means it’ll make money as the college crowd catches it over the next few weeks.

“Oz, the Great and Powerful” pulled in another $22 and is fast approaching $200 million, US box office. So Disney should be in profit on this one — eventually.
