The Oscar best picture field seriously shapes up in the next week or two as major contenders are previewed and critics weigh in on their chances.
A scattering of sure things have opened up until now, but not enough to flesh out a field of from five to ten movies.
“Captain Phillips,” directed by “United 93” genius Paul Greengrass and starring Oscar winner Tom Hanks, has the bloodlines to be in that field. It’s the Maersk Alabama hijacking by Somali pirates story, and it looks absolutely riveting.
