The best James Brown impersonation of 2013 was Cuba Gooding, Jr.’s single scene riff in “The Butler,” the Oscar winning musician’s son pulling off a little turn, a little shout, a serious suggestion of The Godfather of Soul.
Gooding could have played Brown in a bio pic, had the opportunity ever come along when he was younger.
So it’s Chadwick Boseman, who won plenty of praise for his dignified, seething turn as Jackie Robinson in “42” who gets the nod. Mick Jagger’s production company is involved, and the director of “The Help” will be behind the camera when this untitled film about “the hardest working man in show business” unfolds.
