They have dominated women’s tennis for a decade and a half, so much so that the tennis-loving public came to take them for granted. So give the Williams sisters their due, and that’s what “Venus & Serena” appears to want to do.
This documentary, frankly, seems a bit gilded and awfully close to hagiography. They weren’t great sportswomen, their dad was a courtside nightmare, and for all their glorious play, an awful lot of negatives floated around them over the years. It wasn’t all racism and resentment, either, though some of it certainly was. Curious to see how complete this picture, opening next month, turns out to be.
