Box Office: “Carrie” made less than we thought, “Phillips” holds audience, “Rush” dives

The actual box office figures provided from last weekend lowered several films’ take for the weekend, chief among them “Carrie,” which only cleared $16 million, not $17.

“Captain Phillips” only lost a third of its opening weekend audience on its second weekend.

And “Fifth Estate” was the bomb of the year, no getting around it.

But a look further down the charts shows other points of interest. “Instructions Not Included,” the surprise hit from Mexico, appears to have finally run out of gas, just under $45 million.

“Pulling Strings,” a slightly superior Mexican import, won’t make it to $10.

The per screen averages of “12 Years a Slave” and “All is Lost” suggest they’ll do well in wider release, ensuring that they’ll stick around as Awards Season kicks off.

“Blue Jasmine” has run out of juice, at long last, just over $30 million.

And “Rush,” which nobody is talking about, will barely clear $25 million in the U.S. when all is said and done. Thankfully, it didn’t cost that much ($38 million? Really?), but it will have to make ALL its money overseas, where F-1 racing rules. It has, earning almost $50 in other markets thus far.
