Weekend Box Office: Can “Lego” top $50? $60? $70?

lego“Ride Along” will clear $100 million this weekend. Imagine the business they could have done with a funnier movie.

But “The Lego Movie” may open close enough to that to top it by mid-week next week.

Reviews will help. Everybody seemed to like it. “Love” may be too strong a word, but most reviews liked it ever it so much.

I was thinking $35-45, and I was in theaters last night and today. Granted, Saturday is make or break for a kids’ film, but there was nobody there for either day.

But others are predicting big things.

Box Office Mojo throws a generous $68 million prediction out there. And $18 million for “The Monuments Men.”

“Vampire Academy” won’t manage much, but it could get in the black easily and justify a sequel, which is what The Weinstein Co. wants from it. $7 million is the outside of Mojo’s prediction.

Box Office Guru thinks “Lego” will build to $57 million, with “Monuments” in the more reasonable $16 million range, and “Vampire” pulling in a healthier $9 million.
