Box Office: “Lego” blows up, “Monuments” sturdy, “Vampire Academy” flunks out

Friday night was big enough that “The Lego Movie,” with its biggest day today (Saturday) is projected to clear $60 million by late night Sunday.

HUGE opening for an animated film in Feb. What’s more, there are two other animated features in the top ten. So — we’ll see more animation, more movies with toys in them.

“The Monuments Men” earned the worst reviews of George Clooney’s directing/starring career, but it still looks to hit $22 million before the weekend is done. Not bad for a WWII thriller with few thrills and no critical push.

“Vampire Academy” won’t hit $5 million. “Franchise”? That sequel promised in the closing credits? Maybe. Only if the Weinsteins are gluttons for punishment.

“Ride Along” will clear the $100 million mark later today.
