Box Office: “Dracula Untold” draws BO blood, “Judge” underwhelms

boxBloody vampires and their bloody box office domination.

“Dracula Untold” got the weakest reviews of all the new films going into wide release this weekend. It’s not remotely scary, though it has its interesting origin story points — more an action epic (and a cheap one). But a hunky Drac is always a draw, and it looks — based on Friday — like a $20-22 million hit.

“Gone Girl” is rolling to a second weekend win, another $25, based on Friday’s numbers.

“Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible…” is doing well for a kids movie that isn’t a cartoon. It’ll hit $18-20 (Saturday being the BIG tell for a kids movie).

“The Judge” is riding Robert Downey Jr. and Oscar winners Robert Duvall and Billy Bob Thornton and the voluptuous Vera Farmiga to a $14-15 million weekend. It is “Gone Girl”‘s real competition, and it’s not proving to be much competition at all.  Poor reviews hurt it in ways they didn’t hurt a movie with “Dracula” in the title.

“Maze Runner” is closing in on $90 million, which should be the end of the road for it.

“The Boxtrolls” won’t hit $50, as “The Book of Life” will steal its kid cartoon audience next weekend, and Disney has a movie due out a couple of weeks after that.
