I missed this the night it happened, but this video from Franco’s appearance on the Letterman show gets at a couple of truisms. Franco, as I re-discovered on interviewing him re: “Spring Breakers,” is no dumb actor, no matter how … Continue reading

“Riddick,” the first teaser trailer for Vin Diesel’s return to Deep Space
Just enough there to remind us how good he was in “Pitch Black,” and to make us forget “Chronicles of Riddick.” Sept. 6 is when this one hits.

Today’s first screening, “Mud,” with Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon and Michael Shannon
It’s the latest film from the “Shotgun Stories” and “Take Shelter” director Jeff Nichols. Rural, brittle stories with unforgettably “off” characters. “Mud” opens at the end of spring.

Keanu Reeves and a couple of girls half his age are “Generation Um…”
“It gets worse when you get older.” Yeah, Keanu, it does. “On the nose” casting, putting Reeves in the lead role where he’s both confused, “dumb,” and somehow irresistible. “Generation Um…” opens in late May.

Tonight’s Screening: “Room 237”
It goes into wide release late this month, this Stanley Kubrick “Shining” deconstruction. It got into a lot of festivals. Not a lot of awards. Film buffs still hold the Inscrutable Stanley the K in reverence, with some justification. I … Continue reading
