“Runner Runner” shows Ben Affleck’s bad side
Justin Timberlake stars as the online poker victim who tries to get even with “The House,” The House being Ben Affleck, an offshore entrepreneur and cheat. Anthony Mackie is the Fed on their case. Look for “Runner Runner” this fall.

Movie Preview: DeNiro, Tommy Lee and Michelle P. star in “The Family”
It’s got mobsters, DeNiro and a little Rolling Stones on the soundtrack. So naturally, Scorsese’s involved. As a producer. Damned if Monsieur Luc Besson (“The Professional”), mostly a producer these days, doesn’t step back behind the camera for this witness … Continue reading

Tonight’s Screening: “This is The End”
Competing screenings this evening, a “Man of Steel” one and “This is the End.” I have other chances to catch Super-Dooper Man and I could use a laugh, so “This is the End” it is. Franco and Rogen, McBride and … Continue reading

Tonight’s Screening: “V/H/S 2”
An omnibus horror package, short scary as all get out films by multiple directors — including Eddie “Get Ready” Sanchez and Gregg Hale “Fellow Well Met” of “The Blair Witch Project.” This isn’t my favorite genre, but I do see … Continue reading

The beautiful children of the well off do drugs and rob from the better-off in this based-on-a-true-story drama from Sofia Coppola. Emma Watson stars, it goes into limited release June 14. They used Paris Hilton’s tacky LA home for some … Continue reading

Movie Preview: “Machete Kills”
The trick to this “Machete” franchise — And really, did the first film earn enough ($26 million) to warrant a sequel?– is finding funny-violent things for Danny Trejo and his all-star supporting cast (Sofia Vergara, Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen/Estevez, Lady … Continue reading

Next Screening, “Blackfish,” about SeaWorld and Orcas and things going wrong
This documentary hits close to home. As upset as SeaWorld got over “The Cove,” “Blackfish,” about keeping orcas as trained performers, will make them hit the roof. “Blackfish” goes into limited release in June.

Movie Preview: Disney’s “Planes”
I love the way Pixar founder and now Disney animation chief John Lasseter keeps doubling down on that lame, toy-sales-driven idea he had for “Cars.” This time, it’s “Planes.” Racing. With one plane afraid of heights. Limp jokes in this … Continue reading

Movie Preview: “Percy Jackson, Sea of Monsters”
Looks very Harry Potter-like, more than the first “Percy Jackson.” Logan Lerman returns, Stanley Tucci, Missi Pyle, Sean Bean. Adding Nathan Fillion as Hermes is a nice touch. “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” opens August 7.
