Movie Review: “I Love You Phillip Morris”

Despite its title, it has nothing to do with cigarettes. But its star, as he once famously said on screen, is absolutely “smokin’.”

Jim Carrey is the narrator,  heart and soul  of “I Love You Phillip Morris,” transforming what could have been a cliched con man comedy, generic Jim Carrey character comedy or run-of-the-mill  gay coming-out comedy into something smarter, sweeter and downright giddy. This long-shelved romp is a real Carrey showcase, one that shouldn’t wear the stigma “damaged goods” simply because it took an absurdly long time — it was at Sundance in January of 2009 — to reach theaters.

Movie Review: “Happythankyoumoreplease”

With the self-consciously clever and sometimes achingly romantic “Happythankyoumoreplease,” TV star Josh Radnor (“How I Met Your Mother”) has concocted a big screen starring vehicle for himself that calls to mind both his hopelessly romantic TV persona, and an earlier sensitive romance by an earlier version of Radnor. “Happythankyoumoreplease” is less mopey and downbeat than TV star Zach Braff’s “Garden State.” But it succeeds in many of the same sweet ways and is similar enough to warrant labeling Radnor “Zach Braff: The Next Generation.”

Movie Review: “True Grit”

Jeff Bridges dons John Wayne’s sizable boots in “True Grit,” a grittier Coen Brothers version of the tale that won the Duke his Oscar forty years ago. And if the fit isn’t as snug and the performance not as warm and exultant as Wayne’s, the movie still manages to be a most worthy Western remake.

Movie Review: “Mesrine: Killer Instinct”

A crime epic in two parts, the story of Jacques Mesrine makes for a glittering tour de force turn by Vincent Cassel in the title role. His mesmerizing presence in the center of Jean-François Richet’s two films lifts them above the somewhat conventional life-and-death-in-crime genre pictures these are.

These are films that emphasize the charismatic “public enemy No. 1″ and his many bank robberies that end in shootouts and frenetic chases. There’s a taste of the backdrop against which Mesrine was formed — a declining, weakened and corrupt France, a Europe erupting in youth revolt and homegrown terrorism (Red Army Brigades, Baeder Meinhoff Group). But there’s little of the logistics — the “how” his many prison escapes were arranged, the “where” all the money from his scores of bank robberies, from France to Canada, went.

Movie Review: “Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1”

Jean-Francois Richet’s two-part chronicle of the gangster Jacques Mesrine is framed within the “Bonnie & Clyde” hail of bullets that ended the notorious gangster’s life. that’s how part one, “Killer Instinct,” of this two part action bio-drama begins. So of course, it’s how “Public Enemy No. 1″ ends.

Mark Wahlberg wants to OWN MLK Day weekend at the movies

Back in his heyday, Will Smith used to brag that “July 4 weekend belongs to ME” at the movies.

Mark Wahlberg is staking his own claim to a piece of the cinematic calendar. As producer and star, he’s making sure his new film, “Broken City,” opens the same weekend as a certain hit he starred in last year.

“We opened ‘Contraband’ on Martin Luther King Day weekend last year, and that did pretty good,” he says. “Allen Hughes (director of “Broken City”) did real well the year before with ‘Book of Eli.’ So we decided not to mess with a good thing. January’s been good to us.”

Movie Review: “LUV”

Image“Training Day” becomes “Coming of Age Day” in “LUV,” a clumsily violent attempt at grafting two reliable genres together into one somewhat edgy picture.

Movie Review: “Black Swan”

“Black Swan” is that rare holiday Oscar contender that is a movie for all seasons, a film that is all things to all people

Artful, epic, operatic even, this thriller set in the world of ballet challenges the viewer with its intelligence and depth and wit. It has dance sequences — a production of “Swan Lake” is its backdrop — of a caliber to mollify ballet purists, and terror to tempt even horror’s hardcore fans.

Movie Review: “The Way Back”

Peter Weir’s “The Way Back” is an entertaining old-fashioned prison escape movie with a touch of the epic about it. The novelty in this “Great Escape” is that the prisoners — soldiers and political prisoners — are on the run from a Soviet gulag. They’re doing this early in World War II. Thus, their odyssey must take them from Siberia, not East — to where the Japanese are overrunning China — or West, where the Soviets were first the Nazi’s allies, now their fight-to-the-death enemies — but South.

Movie Review: “Drive Angry”

A little respect, if you please, for His Satanic Majesty Nicolas Cage.

Nobody goes off the deep end like Nic. Nobody gives better value in bad movies than the sleepy-eyed Oscar winner with a gift for picking bad movies.

“Drive Angry” is a very entertaining B, C or D-movie, an over-the-top and in-your-face grindhouse gore, guns and “Gun it” picture that’s about epic shootouts, bone-snapping brawls, bare breasts and muscle cars.
