Documentary Review: A fashion trailblazer made us recognize “Invisible Beauty”
“Invisible Beauty” is a documentary that makes one reconsider, yet again, the role fashion plays in society by how it has always narrowed “standards of beauty,” how it presents “what power looks like” and by remembering a woman who was … Continue reading

Movie Review: A Refugee confronts her Tormentor — “Our Father, the Devil (Mon père, le diable )”
Breathless suspense and a powerful performance of internalized trauma and barely-hidden rage by Babetida Sadjo make “Our Father, the Devil” a thriller that stands out from the pack. It’s the story of a conflict zone refugee suddenly confronted by a … Continue reading

Netflixable? Filipino Romance “Love You Long Time” isn’t about what you might think it is
Whatever its title in Tagalog/Filipino, translating the chaste, wistful “different timelines” romance into “Love You Long Time” for international consumption was…unfortunate. Do a quick online search for it. I’ll wait. This turned up. A LOT. Right? Even skipping by the … Continue reading

Movie Preview: Aykroyd and Chevy Chase reunite in R.L. Stine’s “Zombie Town”
This has a whiff of “Canadian Indie” about it. Aykroyd, Henry Czerny, Scott Thompson. Looked it up, yup. Sudbury, Ontario, Great White North. R.L. Stine appears in an adaptation of one of his kid-horror tales. There’s another Chase — A … Continue reading

Movie Preview: Citywide Insomnia leads to an unholy “Thirst”
This mildly chilling trailer for an indie horror that drops on Sept. 5. Not that familiar with the cast, but if you went to the right acting conservatory, “How to respond to the terrifying” is covered fully sophomore year.

Movie Preview: Aiden Gillen’s a Private Eye named “Barber”
This looks utterly generic, but well-cast with possible charms for fans of the detective mystery genre. Gillen’s got a rare lead, good to see. Sept. 22.

Movie Review: Da Vinci faces Life’s Ultimate Question in the Animated Delight, “The Inventor”
Let’s celebrate the late summer release of “The Inventor,” a musically animated jewel about Leonardo Da Vinci’s last years that’s certainly the loveliest animated film of the year, thus far. It’s more kid-friendly than “made for children.” You’ll find it … Continue reading

Movie Preview: Benicio, Justin T., Alicia Silverstone and Tom Nowicki — a murder mystery titled “Reptile”
This one comes to Netflix Oct. 6. Looks good. Haven’t seen nearly enough of Benicio del T of late. Or his one-time co-star, Ms. Silverstone. Nowicki? I know the guy. Winter Park, Fl, “Blindside” and a lot of other movies. … Continue reading
