Will this be similar to playwright David Lee's take on Anita Bryant in his Pieface show at the Fringe? I saw it and while it refreshed forgotten (repressed?) memories of the orange juice lady, I also personally thought the show was a bit strident and overly stomped on Bryant. Don't get me wrong -- the cause she espoused and her attitudes were monstrous. But as you say, product of her times and victim of her own oppression. I'd love to see something that gave her more humanity.

I wonder how Daisy fits into your wonderful description of the "emptiness" of that "rotten crowd's" pursuits?

Daisy always struck me as a vapid narcissist, and you're right -- Mia Farrow got that down.

But Carey Mulligan's sad eyes, brimming with tears, make me think more of an abuse victim. I haven't seen the film yet -- still waiting for my film-pal to have a day off in this wretched economy of which we are not on the sculpted-hedge side. But I'm expecting her to feel as much a part of the heart of this film as Gatsby.

I enjoyed your insights. Way beyond what passes for film criticism in other parts these days.

Good point. We're pretty saturated with electronic entertainment.

Also, if studios want multiple blockbusters, we need economic growth and a wealthy populace. But public policy is going in the other direction.

There was a Chinese movie with the same name, a huge success in China, and it was fabulous.
It starts with the 1976 earthquake in China but the story is different than this one in Chile. It follows one family for 30 years or so until a later aftershock re-unites them. I think the aftershock was more the effect of finding a family member you thought had died in the big earthquake actually was alive
so many years later, and what both sides went through during the years in between.

I'd love it if you could ask him questions about his other projects like The Double and Midnight Sun, and also his plans for his work with theater. Other than that, maybe favorite magic trick or if he did anything in particular to get into character or if there's a magician/anybody who he derived inspiration from?
